The Herriman Fire was initially dubbed the Camp Williams Fire, the location of its start. At 3:30 pm Sunday artillery training exercises caused machine gun fire to ignite dry brush. That prompted the fire spark, winds fueled the fire’s advance toward The Cove, High Country III, and Herriman Heights subdivisions as the fire burned through Rose Canyon and Arnold Hallow.Utah National Guard spokesman Hank MacIntire defending the gunfire practices at Camp Williams Sunday that prompted the fire. He said that brushfire is common. The difference here was a jump in winds spread the fire, so fast that a Blackhawk helicopter couldn’t put out the blaze. He says mother nature just got the best of them.

Jordan spokesman Steve Dunham said the district can afford to pay for step and lane bumps now because of a $10 billion education package approved by Congress. Utah expects to receive $101 million and at least a portion of that money will go to school districts. But, Dunham said, Jordan also will have to use local revenue to fund raises. The federal money has to be spent in the current school year. FEMA granted last night a management assistance grant that will cover 75% of the fire’s costs. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has deployed 124 National Guardsman and has been on scene himself since Sunday. Local emergency declarations were made Sunday evening by Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon and Herriman’s Mayor.
